"2003 was among the best years for red wine in the Adelaide Hills and one where even merlot ripened beautifully at our cold Ashton site. To show what the variety can do alone we kept aside and bottled the best five barrels instead of using them, as we usually do, for our "Five" blend. The merlot was fermented in new and seasoned French oak for more than three years and then matured for a further year in the bottle before release. While I swear ther's no pinot noir in it I can certainly pick up some of the same beguiling forest-floor aromas I found in our '02 pinot. Drink now to around 2015."
